Master Arts in Christian Education(MACE)
 

A. Purpose:
  The primary purpose of the Master of Arts in Christian Education is to equip and prepare students to become competent leaders in the educational ministries of churches. It is designed to help students develop their own philosophy of Christian education and sharpen existing pedagogy while pursuing in depth innovative teaching methodology. The program is designed to offer a balance between studies (such as the Bible, Church History, and Christian Theology) and the best in educational theories and practices.

B. Objectives:
  The students of Master of Arts in Christian Education (MACE) will:

- Recognize the general Christian knowledge including the Bible, its background, hermeneutics, and the various theological subjects.
- Apply the Christian educational skills and knowledge to educational ministry within the context of the total mission of the local church or in the pluralistic society.
- Be able to develop breadth of the social, and behavioral sciences that under gird educational practice and the contexts in which educational ministry take place.

C. Components and Requirements:
  Course Requirement
    The program requires a total of 20 courses (60 credits)+ chapel requirement, a grand total of 64 credits. Students participating in this degree program must complete not only 20 courses, but also must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or more and be present at graduation exercises.
  Final Project/Thesis
    For Project/Thesis, a student will write a thesis or a major essay, working out the implications and possibilities of theological study for future ministry or for life-enrichment. The Project/Thesis Seminar is a weekly meeting of all candidates in the second year with a faculty member to consider problems of common concern in bringing the program to a focus in a ¡°future program¡± (thesis or project).

The Thesis tutorial is a writing of the thesis in an informal arrangement with a faculty member, meeting together as needed for guidance and criticism. The spring term Thesis Tutorial is pro forma, allowing the candidate to complete the final form of the thesis for presentation to the Faculty.
  Chapel Requirement
    GCU requires all students to attend chapel with 1 credit per semester. Students will receive a Pass/Fail grade on Chapels.

Description This course surveys the history and literature of Israel to the end of the United Kingdom. In dealing with Israelite economic, social, political, cultural, and religious life, the Old Testament is illuminated by studies in archaeology, geography, and ancient Near Eastern texts.

Description This course provides a systematic presentation of the Christian faith. Using biblical constructs, historical developments, and confessional statements, students explore the Doctrine of the Word, Doctrine of God, the Doctrine of Humanity, and the Doctrine of Christ.

Description This is a historical survey course giving attention to patterns, methods and approaches of the Christian mission in history. Topics include monasticism, Catholic missionary orders, Pietism, colonialism, and the rise of ecumenism.

Description This is an overview course examining past and present learning theories with an emphasis on the Christian view of the learner and information processing. Students will be exposed to a variety of theories of education related to teaching and learning styles for eventual use in a parish education program.

Description An introduction to the educational foundation for ministry in the church which includes historical, theological and philosophical foundations, underlying dynamics of the teaching-learning situation, an understanding of different learning styles, as well as practical guidelines for doing Christian education that is both biblical and contemporary.

Description In this course students will explore questions about purpose, ends, and means of Christian education, and assess Christian philosophy through readings, discussions, and lectures. In the class students will be required to discuss philosophical debates about controversies in modern education and recognized the ultimate goal of Christian education.

Description Theoretical, research-based, and practical aspects of classroom teaching. Topics include classroom management, planning, evaluation and teaching strategies which emphasize technology integration, team planning, investigate teaching methods for church school.

Dept CE Number 642 Title Christian Education in Multi-Cultural Context
Credits 3
Description In the context of the immigrant church, Christian education should be applied with culture of the 1st, 1.5 and 2nd generations. In this reason this course will suggest what a differentiation between generations and meaning to Christian educator is. In so doing that, teaching leadership in multi-cultural context will be core issues in this course.

Description The field of practical theology has its life in relation to the missions of religious institutions, communities of faith, and lived religious experience, that is, how faithful people live out their faith in social, political, and cultural settings. Because it requires analysis of the history and theology that are effective or normative for such institutions, communities, and situations, practical theology requires a substantial understanding of history and theology. Thus, the field of practical theology is eminently interdisciplinary and involves contextual research both inside and outside of Christian congregations.

Description Challenges abound for pastors and educators serving second generation Asian-American congregations. This course will examine the particular context of ministry in Asian-American congregations with specific attention paid to youth and young adult ministry, the Asian vs. American cultures, and resolving conflicts in family and church situations.

Description Designed especially for those who will carry responsibility for youth and young adult ministry in the congregation, this course begins with an exploration of the youth sub-culture today and its implications for ministry. Other topics to be explored include the particular developmental challenges of youth and young adults, ministry with young people in crisis, changing family patterns and emerging new strategies in ministry with youth. The course will also focus on young adults and how churches are faithfully reaching out and including these ¡°Gen Xers¡± in their congregation.
