Bachelor Arts in MUSIC (BAMUS)

A. Purpose:
The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree is specifically designed to permit a student to concentrate on music within the context of a liberal arts program. This allows the student opportunity to pursue music studies as well as liberal arts subjects. The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree is offered with applied concentrations on piano, organ, voice, orchestral instruments, composition, and choral conducting.

B. Objectives:
The students who graduated from the Bachelor of Arts in Music will:
1. Develop specialized skills and knowledge for piano, organ, voice, instruments, composition, or choral conducting.
2. Be held a higher standard of technical ability, artistry, and difficulty in music.
3. Achieve a certain level of depth and breadth of repertoire.
4. Be prepared for a successful career in the field, for both as a performer and a teacher.

C. Admissions to the Department of Music:
All prospective music majors must qualify for specific degree program study in the department by audition. Applied music study may not be initiated until the student has been fully accepted by the School of Music as music major.

Prior to audition to a music degree program, the prospective music major is required to complete an application form to the School of Music and present an audition in the principal area of applied concentration and demonstrate a musical background sufficient for the understanding of basic musicianship studies at the level of entry into the music program. Auditions are conducted by the music faculty. Applicants schedule auditions by making arrangement with the office of the School of Music.

D. Components and Requirements:
  Audition Requirement
    1. Piano, organ, or composition auditions must include two piano solo works representative of the baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary periods.
2. Voice auditions must demonstrate clear diction, accurate pitch, acceptable tone quality, breath control, a concept of phrasing, and ability to communication through the songs. Singers must have two solo songs in contrasting styles chosen from baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary art song repertory. Audition repertory could include English and Italian art songs, German and French art songs, oratorio and opera arias.
3. Instruments auditions must include at least two solo works, one of which must be a complete movement from a concerto or sonata from the baroque, classical, romantic, or contemporary periods.
* All music performed must be memorized. Accompanists for auditions can be provided by the Department of Music. Applicants may make arrangements for accompaniment by contacting the office of the Department of Music.
  General requirement
Requirements include recital participation, choir participation, piano proficiency, applied juries and a senior recital. A senior recital consists of a 45- to 60-minute recital.
  Piano Proficiency Requirement
All students in music major except piano and organ will be required to pass an examination covering functional keyboard skills. It includes scales, arpeggio, and chord progressions in all major and minor keys and harmonization with given melodies. It is intended that this requirement be met during the second semester of the sophomore year.
  Applied Music Instruction and Requirement
Applied music lessons are designed for students who wish to study an instrument while in college. Three hour of credit per semester represents one individual one-hour lesson per week and is available to all students in music major. Credit is established through individual juried examination at the end of each semester. Assessment is based on performance standards and satisfactory progress. No absences are allowed in applied lessons except for medical reasons.
Unexcused absences may result in the lowering of the applied grade for the semester. If illness prevents a student¡¯s attendance, the teacher should be notified before the lesson. Any student missing more than three lessons will not receive credit for that semester.
In addition, students¡¯ recital is held every semester. In this recital, students share with their peers their repertoire and their progress. Also, students are expected to play in the school chapel at least once per semester, and more often when deemed appropriate by the instructor.
